A few useful words¶
| Word | Meaning in Story Engine |

| Rule | A possible story moment, with criteria and a list of instructions |
| Criteria | The conditions used to decide whether a Rule fits |
| Mandatory | Required. Every enabled mandatory condition must pass |
| Optional | A detail that adds a point when true without excluding the Rule when false |
| Story Director | The system that chooses a matching Rule when requested |
| Category | A name that groups the Rules considered by a request |
| Global Rule | A Rule with no category, considered alongside named categories |
| Priority | The importance tier checked before score |
| Score | The number of passing enabled criteria on an eligible Rule |
| Fallback | A broadly suitable response for cases where more specific content does not fit |
| Story history | The record of what the Director has selected, how often and how recently |
| Bark | A short contextual line, such as a warning, greeting or passing comment |
| World state | Facts about the game, usually held in variables or other game systems |
| Rule Trace | The editor's explanation of a Director request and its selection |
| Story Insights | The editor window for reviewing history and recorded coverage |
| Actor key | A saved, unique identity for a spawned character's story history |
You may also see fuzzy selection used to describe the approach. Here it means that several Rules can partially fit the situation, and the Director ranks the eligible ones. Required conditions still have to pass.
