Install Story Engine

Start with a Unity project that already runs Game Creator 2 Core. Keep a backup before importing or upgrading packages.

What you need

To use You need
Story Engine in your own scenes A compatible Unity Editor, a licensed Game Creator 2 Core installation, and Story Engine
The included example scenes A URP project, the Core content packs listed below, Unity UI with TextMeshPro, Input System, and AI Navigation
Story Engine in a graph A compatible ActionFlow 2 installation, which is optional

The release targets Unity 6.3 LTS and supported 6.5 or newer versions with Game Creator Core 2.19.61 or newer. Check the exact tested combinations before choosing versions for your project.

You do not need the Game Creator Dialogue or Inventory modules to try the included examples. Their dialogue and item interactions are part of the examples.

Import the package

  1. Install and activate the official Game Creator Core package that supports your Unity version. Wait for Unity to finish importing and compiling it.
  2. Import Story Engine. Its files belong under Assets/GC2StoryEngine.
  3. Keep Rules and Prefabs. Import Examples if you want to follow the example walkthroughs. You can leave that folder out for an engine-only installation.
  4. Wait for Unity to finish importing. Check the Console for errors before continuing.
  5. Open Window > Game Creator > Story Engine > Rule Editor. An empty list is normal if your current scene has no Rules yet.

The examples are included directly. There is no second Story Engine installer to run.

Prepare the examples

In Game Creator's Content window, install these packs bundled with Core:

Content pack Used by
Blockout 1.7.13 The example environments
Characters 1.9.26 The example player and character content
Core Examples 1.12.29 Market Adventure's sit-exit animation

Make sure your project has Unity UI, Input System and AI Navigation. When Unity asks, import TextMeshPro Essential Resources. In Player Settings, set Active Input Handling to Input System Package (New) or Both.

Use URP for the examples. Story Engine itself does not depend on a render pipeline, but the supplied example materials do.

Then open:

Assets/GC2StoryEngine/Examples/Core/Scenes/1_HelloRule.unity

Enter Play Mode and follow the scene's prompts. The Hello Rule walkthrough explains what to look for.

Before making a player build

Add the scenes you use to the active Build Profile scene list. Importing Story Engine does not change that list. Market Adventure's restart button also needs its scene in the list.

Keep Rules/link.xml with the engine. It is needed when building with IL2CPP and high managed stripping.

Upgrading an existing project

Back up the project and a few representative saved games. Retain the identities of existing Rules, and read Saving and spawned characters before renaming categories used by a released game.

If Unity reports missing Game Creator classes or methods, check that you imported the official Core package for your Unity version. Two Core packages can display the same version while containing different Unity compatibility code.
